Wainwright Walks

Walk in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright

Welcome to this new addition to the website. We will feature Wainwright Walks that are a short distance from Lowfield House, and we kick-off with 'Little Langdale and Great Langdale. Come back soon, as new walks will be added over the forthcoming weeks.

Little Langdale and Great Langdale

WALK DISTANCE: 9.2 MILES/14.8 KILOMETRES

DIFFICULTY: EASY-MODERATE


ON FOOT FROM LOWHALL GARTH

This circular walk, that originates from Elterwater, can be joined at Lowhall Garth after 24 minutes on foot from Lowfield's doorstep, and concluded at Lowfield House 15 minutes after crossing Slater's Bridge.


From Lowfield House, turn left onto Side Gates road. After approximately 11 minutes you will come to the Three Shires Inn on your right, continue up the road a further 3 minutes or so, then turn left down a tarmac lane, sign posted for Tilberthwaite. After a short walk you will come to a fork in the path signposted Slater's Bridge to the right, take the fork to the left. After a short distance cross the bridge over the River Brathway then turn right onto a lane, that will take you to Lowhall Garth.

This circular walk starts from Elterwater, a 7-minute drive from Lowfield. Directions for Elterwater - Google Maps.

WALK FEATURES/SIGHTS: Little Langdale Tarn with Wetherlam, Lingmore Fell and from Slater's Bridge, The Langdale Pikes, Fell Foot Farm, Blea Tarn, Side Pike, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, and Pike O’ Stickle, Pike O’ Blisco, The Band, Oxendale, Mickleden, Great Langdale and its Beck, Harrison Stickle, Oak Howe, Chapel Stile.

WALK FEATURES/SIGHTS: Beautiful views of Windermere, glimpses of Loughrigg Tarn and Elter Water, stunning views of Grasmere with Helm Crag looming behind it, incredible views of Grasmere from Loughrigg Fell, Rydal Cave and Lake.

Loughrigg Fell, Ambleside

WALK DISTANCE: 6 MILES/9.65 KILOMETRES

DIFFICULTY: EASY


This half a day, easy loop walk from the centre of Ambleside offers a tour through beautiful woodland, and craggy fells. If you favour lovely views and a taste of the fells without too much effort, this walk is a great one to consider. 



ON FOOT FROM AMBLESIDE MAIN CAR PARK

Walk toward Vicarage Road to meet the start of the trail, where it will soon meet quiet tree lined paths, away from the town.

This circular walk starts from Ambleside's main car park, a 16-minute drive from Lowfield. Directions for the car park - Google Maps.

Lingmoor Fell Circular Walk

WALK DISTANCE: 3.7 MILES/6 KILOMETRES

ELEVATION: 370 METRES

DIFFICULTY: MODERATE


This loop walk has two notable climbs but with distance enough between both, there is time to recover. When ascending Side Pike and Linmoor Fell, the terrain can be rocky, with some very minor scrambling. It is advisable to undergo this walk on a dry day, when underfoot is not wet.


STARTING POINT

From Blea Tarn car park, head over the road and through the gate, where you will see Blea Tarn to your right. Follow the flat gravel path that runs around the tarn for 250m to reach the wood, and an flat easy trail.

WALK FEATURES/SIGHTS: Great views out to waterfalls Bowfell and Whorneyside Force, Blea Tarn, Langdale Pikes, ‘fat man’s agony’ also known as ‘the squeeze’ upon descending Side Pike.

WALK FEATURES/SIGHTS: Some of the very best views of the Lake District on a clear day. Bird Feeding Station/huge range of bird species. This Langdale Pikes circular walk explores the beautiful fells near Dungeon Ghyll.

Langdale Pikes Circular Walk

WALK DISTANCE: 8 MILES/12.87 KILOMETRES

DIFFICULTY: CHALLENGING IN PARTS/EXTREMELY SLIPPERY  IN THE WET/IF WET UNDERFOOT


ON FOOT FROM STICKLE TARN CAR PARK

Leave from the top end of the car park and head through a wooden gate behind Sticklebarn. Pass between stone walls on the left and a bird feeding station to the right. 


JOIN WALK AFTER A SHORT DRIVE

This circular walk starts from Stickle Tarn car park, a 17-minute drive from Lowfield. Directions for the car park - Google Maps.
